I live in Queens, New York City - the food capital of the United States, brimming with some of the best eats the world can offer. In just one afternoon, I can walk through the blissful haze of intoxicating shawarma trucks, sparklingly greasy pizza, hand-crafted momos, and aromatic Colombian bakeries. This is a city that loves to eat - and yet, like so many other places, not enough people can eat. I am reminded of this stark reality each time I see someone digging through overflowing trash cans, or when I notice children asking for their friends’ leftovers, or when I hear coins clinking in a cup someone is holding outside of a McDonald’s. Hunger and food insecurity continue to ravage the world - it is estimated that 10% of the world’s population suffers from hunger or food insecurity. With empty stomachs come unrealized dreams and altered futures - hunger causes stunted cognitive and physical growth for children, and can translate into a lifetime of poverty. Tackling global hunger is about creating a kinder, more just world where everyone gets a fair chance at a full plate and a promising future, not spent thinking about their next meal. The glaring inequality makes global hunger even more devastating to me: I have the privilege of abundance and choice (and waste!) when 848 million other people do not. As privileged individuals, we all have a shared duty to address global hunger and food insecurity. We cannot be satisfied with simply passing the dish along - we must all work to make the plates fuller and the table bigger. We can work towards abundance for all and make sure every person goes to bed with their bellies full.
