Introduction
As we carry on with our everyday activities, basic necessities such as food are taken for granted. Even though there are countries who enjoy the luxury of excess food, millions of people around the world are unable to access the essential nutrients needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In this blog, we will dive into the causes of world hunger, the catastrophic impact on the general population, as well as investigate potential solutions to battle this crisis.
World Hunger Explained
As of 2022, an estimated 828 million [1] experience hunger each night with an astonishing 345 million [2] people facing a severe level of food insecurity. These figures are extremely concerning and highlight the uneven distribution of food considering we live in a world that produces enough food to feed its population. World hunger is not entirely tied to lack of resources. Instead, it is an issue tied to root causes such as poverty, climate change, and unequal distribution of resources.
Roots Causes of World Hunger
Poverty: Poverty is the biggest contributing factor to world hunger as about 9% [3] of the world are unable to afford food that supplies them with the nutrition they need in order to survive.
Political Instability & Armed Conflicts: Political instabilities disrupt the production and distribution of food while armed conflicts result in destroyed crops and families fleeing which makes them turn to other places for food.
Unequal Distribution of Resources: While certain individuals enjoy a widespread amount of food, others fail to consume the essential nutrients to live healthy lives.
Climate Change: Extreme weather events such as temperatures rising and changing rainfall patterns lead to reduced agriculture productivity
World Hunger Hampers Growth
As long as not everyone has access to the necessary nutrition, a cycle of deprivation is triggered. This cycle prolongs a wide variety of effects such as hindering vulnerable populations, societal well-being, and hampers economic growth.
Effects of World Hunger
Hinders Vulnerable Population: Children who are malnourished experience stunted growth, compromised cognitive abilities, and are more susceptible to diseases. Pregnant Women who experience hunger are likely to give birth to a malnourished child and continue the cycle of hunger and poverty.
Undermines Societal Well-Being: Malnourished individuals are likely to cause not only physical change such as anger but psychological changes such as depression, anxiety, and poor sleep.
Hampers Economic Growth: Hunger reduces productivity and therefore places any unnecessary burden on education or health systems.
Potential Solutions to World Hunger
Improved Food Distribution: Better infrastructure along with more efficient supply chains are necessary to ensure that food reaches those who need it.
Reduction of Wastage: Reducing the amount of food wastage would significantly increase the availability of food
Adapting to Climate Change: Investing in climate smart technology can help vulnerable populations adapt to changing conditions.
Sustainable Agriculture: Sustainable agriculture is likely the biggest change required to mitigate world hunger. Around the globe, 65% [3] of low-income workers rely on farming for not only meals but income. Increasing the amount of sustainable agriculture would provide not only more jobs but also more food for those who need it which also improves food distribution.
Conclusion
World hunger is a complicated crisis that requires a comprehensive approach by both governments and common folks. By educating ourselves about the many root causes of hunger, promoting necessary practices, and empowering the vulnerable, significant leaps can be taken to drastically reduce the impact of the current situation. Through a cooperative effort, many underprivileged individuals will have access to job opportunities and therefore food which ensures a brighter and more fair future for all.
